DHL Freight Forwarding: Services, Costs, and How to Choose
DHL freight forwarding is a business-to-business cargo service that arranges international transport by air, sea, road, or a combination of modes. It is different from booking a small DHL Express parcel: a freight forwarder coordinates the movement of commercial cargo, documents, carrier capacity, and often customs-related hand-offs. Whether DHL is a suitable choice depends less on its name alone than on your route, cargo profile, service level, and the support included in its quotation.
Is DHL a freight forwarder?
Yes. DHL Global Forwarding is DHL Group’s freight-forwarding business, serving shippers that need international cargo moved rather than simply sending an express parcel. A forwarder acts as the organiser of a shipment: it can plan the route, obtain transport capacity, arrange collection and delivery legs, prepare or coordinate transport documents, and work with customs brokers or customs teams where required.
This does not necessarily mean the forwarder physically operates every aircraft, vessel, lorry, warehouse, or final-mile vehicle involved. Its value is in managing the transport chain and providing a single point of coordination. What freight forwarding means for an importer or exporter
Freight forwarding is the commercial arrangement of cargo transport from origin to destination. The work can include choosing a transport mode, booking space, organising pickup and delivery, managing shipment milestones, and coordinating paperwork between the shipper, carrier, consignee, and customs representatives.
For an importer, the practical question is not simply whether a forwarder can move the goods. It is whether the quote makes clear who is responsible for each part of the journey, including origin handling, main carriage, destination charges, customs entry, duty and tax payments, insurance, and final delivery. Incoterms agreed with the supplier also affect which party is expected to arrange and pay for particular legs.

DHL freight-forwarding options
The appropriate service normally follows the balance you need between speed, cost, shipment size, and handling requirements. Air freight is generally considered when time is more important than the higher transport cost. Ocean freight is commonly used for larger, less time-sensitive cargo. Road and rail legs may connect factories, ports, airports, warehouses, and the final destination, while multimodal services combine more than one mode.
Rather than assume a mode is cheaper from the headline rate, compare the complete scope of each option. For sea freight, ask whether the offer is for a full container or a shared-container shipment, and identify destination handling, delivery, and potential storage charges. DHL itself publishes an ocean freight market update, reflecting the fact that demand, capacity, and market conditions can affect planning. A quotation is therefore a commercial offer for a defined shipment and period, not a permanent benchmark for every route.
What affects DHL freight-forwarding costs?
There is no reliable universal answer to the question, “Who is cheaper, FedEx or DHL?” It compares businesses that may be quoting different services: express parcel delivery, air freight, ocean freight, customs support, or door-to-door cargo management. A lower transport figure can also exclude charges that another quote includes.
Ask every provider to set out the same scope before comparing prices. The total can be affected by:
- origin, destination, route, and transport mode;
- weight, dimensions, chargeable weight, and cargo volume;
- service urgency, capacity, and the date the cargo is ready;
- collection, terminal, documentation, delivery, and other handling services;
- the commodity, packaging, special handling, and insurance needs; and
- customs duties, taxes, and broker or clearance charges that may sit outside the freight price.
Do not treat import duty, VAT or sales tax, and freight charges as the same thing. Customs charges depend on the importing jurisdiction, product classification, customs value, origin, and other applicable rules. Your forwarder can help coordinate clearance, but the importer should still understand who is named as importer of record and who is liable for the declaration and charges.
Who is the biggest freight forwarder?
There is no single answer without specifying the mode and measurement. Rankings can use air-cargo tonnage, ocean-container volume, revenue, geographic reach, or another metric, and merger activity can change comparisons. GoFreight’s 2026 ranking places DHL Group among the leading global forwarders and describes DHL Global Forwarding as the largest air forwarder in its air-volume table, while listing Kuehne+Nagel as the leading ocean forwarder.
Other published comparisons use different data and reach different positions. For example, Red Stag Fulfillment’s market-share overview describes DHL as second globally in both air and ocean forwarding. This is why a shipper should treat “biggest” as background rather than a purchasing decision. The best forwarder for a shipment is the one that can provide an appropriate route, clear commercial terms, useful local support, and suitable handling for the cargo.
Scale can still matter when you need broad coverage or frequent shipments. Impakter’s profile of major forwarders includes DHL Global Forwarding among the large international providers and highlights its air and ocean activity. It does not, however, establish that DHL will offer the best solution or price for every lane.
How to request and compare a DHL freight-forwarding quote
Give the forwarder enough detail to quote the correct service. Vague requests often produce estimates that later change once the cargo, collection address, or delivery requirements are confirmed.
- Describe the goods accurately, including packaging, quantity, dimensions, gross weight, and any dangerous-goods or temperature-control requirements.
- State the collection point, destination, cargo-ready date, and whether you need port-to-port, airport-to-airport, or door-to-door transport.
- Provide the intended Incoterm and identify the seller, consignee, importer of record, and any broker already appointed.
- Ask what is included and excluded, especially origin charges, destination handling, customs clearance, duties and taxes, insurance, storage, and final delivery.
- Compare like-for-like quotes, the validity period, transit routing, and the process for rate changes or delays.
For repeat imports or exports, ask about reporting, shipment visibility, claims procedures, and a named operational contact. For a one-off shipment, clear scope and documentary accuracy are usually more valuable than selecting a provider on the lowest headline figure alone.
When DHL Global Forwarding is likely to fit
DHL Global Forwarding may suit businesses moving commercial cargo across borders, particularly where they need coordination across several transport legs or regular support on international lanes. It may be less appropriate to judge it against a parcel courier when you are shipping a small document or consumer package; that is a different service and cost model.
Before booking, confirm the service scope in writing, ensure the commercial invoice and packing details match the goods, and make responsibilities under the sale contract clear. A well-defined shipment brief gives DHL, FedEx, or any other forwarder a fair basis for a quote and gives you a much better basis for comparing the result.
